Evaluation of Thyroid Disorders & Thyroid Surgery

Thyroid disorders involve the malfunctioning of the thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that regulates your metabolism, energy levels, and overall hormonal balance. Evaluation involves clinical examination, blood tests, imaging, and sometimes biopsy to identify the underlying issue.

Types of Thyroid Disorders

  • Hypothyroidism – Underactive thyroid
  • Hyperthyroidism – Overactive thyroid
  • Goiter – Enlarged thyroid gland
  • Thyroid Nodules – Lumps or growths in the thyroid
  • Thyroid Cancer – Malignant tumors in the gland

Treatments

  • Medical Management – Hormone replacement for hypothyroidism or medications to suppress hyperthyroidism
  • Radioactive Iodine Therapy – Used to shrink an overactive thyroid or nodules
  • Thyroid Surgery (Thyroidectomy) – Partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland, typically recommended for large goiters, nodules, or cancer

Common Causes

  • Autoimmune diseases (like Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease)
  • Iodine deficiency
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Infections or inflammation
  • Radiation exposure

Symptoms

  • Sudden weight changes
  • Fatigue or weakness
